Grading Policies for 15-128 (FIC)

The FIC is a 1 unit pass/fail course. Passing it is a graduation requirement for all SCS students.

The Rules:

• You must earn a minimum of X points (out of a possible Y) to pass the FIC.
• The exact value of X and Y are unknown to you!
• But, the value of X must include 12 points earned by attending the IC weekly meetings (1 per meeting; there are 14 meetings). Missing more than 2 attendance points will automatically result in failure of the class!
• The rest of the points you will earn by performing "treasure hunts" as described below.

Treasure Hunts (or Where is Jacobo?)

You can earn point by attending the weekly lectures (see above). In addition, you can earn points by finding places on campus and around campus. Most of these places have a historical or traditional value for CMU students. Every week I will give you clues on how to find these locations. To earn points you must do the following:

• read the clue and try to identify the place.
• take a picture of yourself (no group pictures are allowed!) at the place and email it within the allotted time to do so.
• send the picture by email to fic15128@gmail.com Make sure to include your name and CMU userid.
• the first 25-35 students to email the picture earn the points.
• different treasure hunts have different values in terms of points.

Example:

Clue: I am standing next to a large sculpture with people walking towards the sky. Where am I?

Answer: I am standing at the "Walking To The Sky" sculpture at the main entrance on Forbes Avenue. You need to go there and take a picture that will show you and the sculpture. Email the picture as soon as possible.

Tracking your earned points

I will keep track of th epoint you earn (your attendance to the lectures + the pictures you send). I will post your points periodically.

Your Final Grade

In order to "pass" the class you need to earn at least 90% of the total number of point available during the semester. In other words, "X" (the points you earn) divided by "Y" (the total number of points) must be at least 0.90. But, you won't know until the very end of the semester the exact value of Y. Thus you need to earn as many points as you can!
