Carnegie Mellon will host an Alice Institute for interested high school and college instructors June 28 - July 3. Plan on arriving on Saturday, June 28. This institute will explore the Alice programming environment for all teachers looking for an effective and engaging tool to introduce students from middle school through college level to programming and Computer Science. Working with nationally recognized experts in Alice, a tool developed at Carnegie Mellon, teachers will develop an understanding of Alice, and teaching methods suitable for presenting Alice in their own unique environment. The workshop is appropriate for any instructor who is considering or currently using Alice in a pre-CS1 or CS1 course.

Cost for the workshop is $275. The workshop fee will include materials and opening dinner/closing lunch; all other meals are on your own: if your school district is paying, you must add in an appropriate per-diem to cover meals. The cost for single-occupancy, on-campus housing at Resnik Hall is $300.

This seasonally air conditioned building offer five-person suites and double rooms. The guest is able to control their own air conditioning temperature in their sleeping room. The residence has lounges on each floor, laundry facilities and a total of two community kitchens. There is also a cafeteria that is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner on the ground floor. Wireless computer network is available with a guest account. Phones may be requested - the fee is $5.00 per phone per week. Basic furnishings include a twin-sized bed, chest of drawers, desk and chair, closet or wardrobe. Weekly housekeeping and linen change for stays of one week or longer.

Each suite has a microfridge and a common seating area. The bathrooms are shared within each suite.

A campus parking pass, if needed, can be purchased for $48/week.

Wanda P. Dann is Associate Professor of Computer Science at Ithaca College. Her research interests include visualization in programs and programming languages, and innovative approaches to introductory programming. Stephen Cooper is Associate Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Saint Joseph's University. For his work with Alice, he won the largest NSF grant in the university's history. Don Slater is a Lecturer in the Computer Science Department at Carnegie Mellon University. He has been teaching computer science at the high school and college level for over 20 years.
